Women In the Material World
Terminal 2 - Post Office Gallery

To produce Women in the Material World, a team of women photographers and interviewers traveled back to 19 of the original countries included in the original book, The Material World, and to one new country, Jordan. They explored closely the lives of women who agreed to share their hopes, dreams, joys, and sorrows - revealing striking similarities and profound differences. The photographers were faced with a formidable task: make striking images of ordinary lives. The rich texture of images in the book is the result of great skill and deep caring on the part of the photographers as they illuminated the inherent beauty of the subject - a tribute to the collaboration of women photographers and their female subjects.

"[Women in the Material World] is nothing less than a template of a world that has long been invisible. Throughout history, the challenges, the courage, and the oppression of women - the majority of people on earth - have been kept out of sight. Now, the hidden is coming into view: Women in the Material World begins to show what media and culture and consciousness could look like as this imbalance becomes balanced. It's a revelation to see."
