Bike-to-Work at Midway International Airport

The City of Chicago Department of Aviation promotes employee bicycle commuting, in support of the goals and objectives set forth in the City of Chicago Bike 2015 Plan. Airport employees are encouraged to bike to work, year-round.

The Department further acknowledges, and seeks to address, the fact that biking to work poses special challenges, when the work site is a major airport. Distances tend to be greater, traffic tends to be heavier and more industrial, and security concerns are more complex for the airport bike commuter. The Department, in conjunction with other agencies, has taken several small, but significant and concrete steps to support airport bicyclists, including:
• Allowing indoor (e.g. office, cubicle) employee bike storage, to the extent that such storage does not interfere with normal operations and work.
• Installing employee bike racks at O’Hare and Midway work sites (Midway AMC and O’Hare AAB).
• Providing employee lockers and showers at both airports.
• Providing public, indoor bike racks at the CTA entrances to both airports, and at the O’Hare Metra station, to facilitate bike/public transit usage.
• Providing O’Hare ATS bike access, and installing ATS bike racks, to support bike access to/from the O’Hare core.
• Designating an “Airport Bike Ambassador” (Rich Evans, 773-894-7157), to whom bike-related questions, suggestions and concerns can be directed.

To further promote airport bicycle commuting, improve Department-wide bicycle awareness, and to demonstrate our commitment to this program, the Department of Aviation has joined several other City Departments in entering the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation 2008 Bicycle Commuter Challenge. During Chicago’s Bike to Work Week of June 7-13 ALL airport employees are encouraged to employees to use their bike for some or all of their commute, either to the airport itself, or in combination with CTA buses or trains.
• Please notify our Bike Ambassador/Challenge Team Leader, Rich Evans, at 773.894.7157, or revans@ohare.com if you plan to participate, for additional information, and so that you and the team can be credited.
• Bike commuters can use CTA as part of their commute:
•Most stations (including those at the airports) provide bike racks
• Buses provide mobile racks, throughout the day
• Bikes can be carried on trains, other than during rush hour
