A New Flavor
(CHICAGO) November, 2000 – HOLY COW! No, it’s not Wrigley Field, it’s the new Midway Airport! A taste of the downtown Chicago comes to the Southwest side when the new Midway Airport concessions area opens next year. One of Chicago’s most popular venues comes to Midway Airport with the opening of Harry Carey’s restaurant—but it doesn’t stop there.
The new Midway Airport concessions area will feature fifty stores and restaurants all set in a Chicago neighborhood style.
In addition to Harry Carey’s, the first of the new restaurants to open include: Pegasus Restaurant & Taverna, Lalo’s Mexican Restaurant, Gold Coast Dogs, King Wah Express, Home Run Inn Pizza, Tuscany, Reilly’s Daughter, Manny’s Coffee Shop and Deli, Miller’s Pub and more.
Specialty gift shops will feature gourmet candies and foods from well-known Chicago companies such as Fannie May Candies, Goose Island Brewery and Eli’s Cheesecake as well as products from Chicago institutions like Buddy Guy’s Legends, Wrigley Field and Comiskey Park.
"The new Midway Airport concessions program will bring enhanced quality and value for our customers, while keeping a local flare," said Commissioner Thomas R. Walker. "Travelers will enjoy a new spacious and modern facility and the types of food and gifts that make Chicago unique."
New shops and restaurants are set to open early in 2001, with the opening of the new Midway Airport Terminal and concessions triangle. Concessions located throughout the existing concourse and terminal building will remain open until the new concourses are completed. The new concessions area covers almost 50,000 square feet, compared to the existing area of 17,000 square feet. When the new concourse buildings are completed, the concessions area will be located just beyond the security checkpoint, allowing for improved customer service. Travelers will be able to clear security, locate and check in at their gates and then enjoy a wide variety of food, beverage and shopping opportunities. In addition to the concessions triangle, more retail and food choices will be located throughout the new concourses, which are all expected to be completed in 2004.
The Midway Concessions Program was designed to give opportunities to local businesses and disadvantaged business enterprises while providing a Taste of Chicago right in the airport.
