The Beacons are two internally lit geometric sculptures, one square "Blue Beacon", and one circular "Orange Beacon". Suspended in the exit bays of O'Hare International Airport Terminal 5, they welcome
travelers in the Meeter-Greeter area of the arrivals level. Each Beacon identifies and distinguishes one bay from the other with its distinct shape and color.
The compositional painted elements of these two sculptures are colorful orbs and arcs - the visual equivalents for land, sky, water, and space. They may evoke maps of the constellations, or mysteries or the cosmos.
Whether working as a sculptor, painter, or printmaker, artist Steven Heyman has been intrigued with the phenomenon of light and the illumination of objects.
Steven Heyman, born in Los Angeles, California, resides in Chicago. His works are included in various museum, foundation, public, and university collections.
The Beacons were commissioned in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs Public Art Program. |
