On June 5, 2008, High Speed Exit Taxiway C becomes Taxiway A1. Awareness of this pending taxiway change will affect pilots landing and exiting Runways 22R and 27L.

Countdown!

As construction of the O’Hare Modernization Program (OMP) progresses, taxiways at O’Hare are being re-designated. The future north runway is scheduled to be commissioned on November 20, 2008. To avoid pilot confusion, the FAA has mandated a phased re-designation program for runways and taxiways at O’Hare International Airport.

About the Renaming Plan

In order to accommodate pilots as they adjust to the visual development of O’Hare’s airfield, the FAA and the City of Chicago have agreed to make the following runway and taxiway name changes as part of a phased re-designation program:

  • June 5, 2008 – High Speed Exit Taxiway C becomes Taxiway A1, as well as other taxiway redesignations.
  • July 31, 2008 - Additional taxiway name changes.
  • September 25, 2008 – 3,000 foot western extension to Runway 10-28 opens
  • November 20, 2008 - New 7,500 foot Runway 9L-27R will be commissioned

About the Existing Plan

Currently, O’Hare has two east-west runways. New parallel runways, both north and south of the existing runways, will be constructed over the next few years.

By the end of 2011, the Airport will have four parallel east-west runways, two on the north side of the main terminal core area and two on the south. In the future, all runways north of the terminal will be referred to as 9-27 Runways and all runways south of the terminal will be 10-28 Runways. The two north side runways will be named 9L-27R and 9R-27L, and the south side runways will be named 10L-28R and 10R-28L.
