The Department of Aviation is committed to implementing a safety management system (SMS) that enables its management, employees, the airlines, tenants and other business partners to operate in a safe environment. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) defines a safety management system as a formalized approach to managing safety by developing an organization-wide safety policy; formal methods of identifying hazards and analyzing and mitigating risk; methods for ensuring continuous safety improvements; and organization-wide strategies to promote safety.
To achieve the safest airport operations standards possible and the success of the Airport’s SMS, every employee is responsible for communicating information that may compromise the integrity of operations at O’Hare and Midway International Airports. Therefore, it is imperative that the Airports promote uninhibited reporting of all hazards, occurrences, incidents and accidents that affect the safety of O’Hare and Midway Airport operations, employees or tenants. The Chicago Department of Aviation’s ( CDA) policy is that an employee can file a report under the CDA’s Safety and Emergency Management survey reporting system without any fear of retribution, and his or her identity will be kept confidential to the extent permissible by law.
