The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) recognizes that neighborhoods surrounding Chicago O’Hare International Airport (O’Hare) are affected by noise from aircraft operations. The CDA is committed to minimizing these aircraft noise impacts on the neighboring communities. Over the years the CDA has engaged stakeholders to develop and implement noise abatement programs, sound-insulate homes and schools, and explore new elements intended to enhance and improve our noise programs.
The CDA and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) commissioned the extended Runway 9R/27L (9 Right / 27 Left) on December 2, 2021. The extended runway is now 11,260 feet long and remains 150 feet wide making it the second longest runway at O’Hare. The 3,293 feet extension of Runway 9L/27R is the final airfield construction project of the O’Hare Modernization Program (OMP).
